In this lesson, I used an adapted PACE model to teach grammar. Edited video clip of the class & the explanation of the main steps in the class:
Step 1: presentation
Teacher tells the story and presents the target grammar structure “V 得/不 起来. (e.g., 想得起来/想不起来: able to recall/unable to recall)” through a meaningful context: a music video.
Teacher recycles the storyline through pictures to increase comprehension and student participation. The focus is on the meaning, not on the grammar at this point.
Step 2: attention to forms
Teacher invites students to focus on the form/grammar by highlighting the form in red “想得起来/想不起来”.
Teacher asks students their first day at BU and assists students to respond with the target structure 想得起来/想不起来. Teacher evaluates students' understanding of this grammar concept from their responses to the questions. This lesson didn't invite students to complete the "co-construction" step and explicitly explain the rule, in order to make sure that learners use 100% Chinese in the class.
Step 3: form focused practices
This step provides learners plenty of opportunities to use the grammar in meaningful and engaging context.
Practice 1:Students tell each other whether they can recall their first day at BU and what they did during that day. 想得起来/想不起来
Practice 2:Identify the number of faces in the image using target structure.
你看得到/看不到5/6/7 个人?

Practice 3: Discuss different colors in the image.
你看得到/看不到XXX色?

Practice 4: Challenge each other to locate the cities in the map
你找得到/找不到XXXcity?

Extension 1: Role play (interpersonal communication)

Extension 2: Introducing a famous people in the history (presentational communication)
